John Quinn, Malton

John was born in Co Tipperary and joined Edward O’Grady’s yard soon after finishing school to become a conditional jockey. After several years there he headed to England in search of further opportunities.

He landed in Malton where he joined Jimmy Fitzgerald’s thriving operation in the 80’s before branching out to ride as a freelance jockey. After riding the best part of 200 winners he retired in 1990 and ran a livery yard from his base in Settrington. He took the plunge in to the training ranks several years later. He has worked his way up and now has around 75 horses split between his two yards, Bellwood Cottage and Highfield.

John has enjoyed major success over the last twenty years in both Flat and National Hunt racing, he is in fact one of a select group of trainers to have trained both Royal Ascot winners on the flat and Cheltenham Festival winners over the jumps, an outstanding achievement..

John hit the headlines in the 2022 season when his star filly HIGHFIELD PRINCESS won 3 consecutive Group One races in 3 different countries.
